General Questions

Q: What is myhood.ca?
A: myhood.ca is a Toronto apartment rental website that helps people find great places to rent. We do this through a map-based, apartment rental and roommates search engine where viewers can search for listings and apartment reviews by neighbourhood.

Q: Is myhood.ca free?
A: Yes! Every feature and function you see on myhood.ca is free.

Q: Why should I use myhood.ca? How does it benefit me?
A: The following four reasons are why YOU should use myhood.ca as part of your next rental search:

  • We have reviews of apartments. This is the “inside information” that is going to help you narrow down your rental search and ensure that your next rental experience is a good one.
  • You can search for a building where YOU want to live. Our search options get you to exactly where you want to live through a search by neighbourhood (hood), intersection, university/college, TTC subway station and GO station.
  • You can SEE where your options are. The search results are displayed on a map so you can see the actual locations of the buildings that you’re interested in. In addition, we display TTC subway stations, GO stations and grocery stores to give you a better sense of the value of the location.
  • We save you time. We’ve combined the rental and roommate listings from a number of sources including craigslist (not affiliated with myhood.ca), NOW magazine, property managers and real estate agents. This combination of listings eliminates the need to go to all these resources separately, thus saving you a lot of time.
Q: Is there anything I can do to help improve the myhood.ca website?
A: There are two ways you can help improve myhood.ca:

  • If you currently or previously rented a place, you can write a review of your current and past apartment. The more reviews we have on myhood.ca, the more effective the site is to viewers.
  • We need feedback! myhood.ca is a new site and we want to know what you think. Give us comments, let us know what you like, what you dislike, how you would improve the site and let us know of any search locations we should add.
Q: I’ve read the entire FAQ section and it still hasn’t answered my question or resolved my issue – what do I do?
A: Contact us! Email us here. We’ll do our best to get back to you as soon as we can with an answer to your question/issue.

RENT Section Questions

Note: For any questions regarding the search process and understanding the map and map features, please review our Search Help.

Q: Where do all the listings come from?
A: The listings on myhood.ca originated from craigslist (not affiliated with myhood.ca), NOW Magazine, property managers and some real estate agents.

Q: Can I post a rental listing on myhood.ca?
A: Yes. You can post a FREE apartment, roommate or sublet listing on myhood.ca. Post a free listing here.

Q: Once I post a rental listing, how long does it remain active on myhood.ca?
A: 30 days. After which it will be removed.

Q: If I already have an active rental listing, can I repost another rental listing to get better results?
A: No. Unlike many online classifieds that list the rental ads by date (i.e. Craigslist), myhood.ca its displays rental ads both on an interactive map as well as by price in our Search Results section. As such, in both cases, reposting won't help you. Simply post your ad once and once it expires after 30 days, if you have yet to rent out your place, simply repost the ad.

Q: How do I delete my rental, roommate or sublet posting?

A: Log into the members section. Click on the "My Listings" tab. Click the box to the left of the postings that you'd like to delete. On the bottom right of the area, press "delete selected".

REVIEWS Section Questions

Note: For any questions regarding the search process and understanding the map and map features, please review our Search Help.

Q: Who wrote all the reviews?

A: The reviews on myhood.ca were written by current and past tenants.

Q: How many reviews are there on myhood.ca?
A: The number of reviews on myhood.ca is growing everyday, however, as of the beginning of January 2008 we had over 1,100 reviews.

Q: Can I write a review?
A: Yep. You can write a review of both your current and past rental units. Write a review here.

Q: I’ve read a number of reviews and I find some of them to be rude, not useful or not reflective of the building?
A: Fair enough. BUT this is where we need your help. If a review you are reading is rude, derogatory, not useful or not reflective of the building then please press the “No” button under the specific review where it asks you whether that particular review was useful. Doing this will notify the myhood.ca team to take a closer look at that particular review.

Q: I like one of the apartment buildings that’s been reviewed, how do I find availabilities?
A: Press the red “check availability” button in the review details page. This will take you to the details of that building in our "Rent" section. If there isn't a link on the
“check availability” button (it's grey), then it simply means that there isn't a listing for that particular building on myhood.ca.

Writing Reviews

Q: What makes a great review?
A: The best reviews are rational, realistic, personal and experiential, and tend to offer helpful suggestions. The most useful reviews sometimes mention unique qualities that make the apartment special, or the type of person who might also like to live in the apartment.

Q: What if I had a bad experience? Can I say something negative?
Yes, absolutely. We want to hear about your good experiences and your bad ones. Be sure to include all of the relevant facts and details and be sure keep your review in perspective.

Q: Who can see my name?
A: Only your first name and the neighbourhood you currently live in (ie. Jim, Annex) will appear on the site.

Q: I wrote a review and now I want to change it.
A: To change your review, simply log in, click on the "My Reviews" tab and choose the address of the review your wrote. Please note that if you wrote a review prior to our launch, you will not be able to adjust your review. However the myhood.ca team would be happy do it for you. Please email us here with your full name, building, neighbourhood you live in and the changes you like to make.

Q: Does myhood.ca ever remove reviews?
A: Rarely. But in some cases a member of the myhood.ca team will remove a review when we are made aware of certain situations including:

  • Second-hand experiences and hearsay. For example, you can't give an apartment a bad review because your co-worker complained about his experience at that apartment. Your reviews must be about your personal experiences, not about what you may have heard.
  • Personal attacks. Feel free to explain your bad experience with a superintendent, but myhood.ca is not the place for vicious attacks or name calling.

Tips Questions

Q: What’s the purpose of the TIPS section?
A: At myhood.ca, we’re trying to help renters make more informed decisions about where and from whom they’re going to rent their next place. We accomplish this through reviews, but also in the form of general knowledge. That’s why we created the TIPS section. This section has articles on a range of renting topics including finding a place to live, roommates, the lease, moving and descriptions of neighbourhoods (a.k.a. “hood briefs”).

Q: How do I search through this section?
A: Simply review the tips categories (topics) on the right side of the tips page and within each category there will be relevant articles on that topic.

Q: If I have a tip, can I publish it?
A: If your tip is relevant to an existing article, you can simply comment on that article with your tip. Otherwise, if it makes sense, we’d be happy to publish your tips (we’ll give you credit). Please email us here if you’d like us to publish your tips.
